Express Entry and provincial routes to permanent residence

For most skilled workers, the real question isn’t “am I eligible?” but “is my profile competitive, and what would change that?” The answer depends on your age, language results, education, work history, any Canadian experience, and whether a province would nominate you. We look at all of those together and tell you where the realistic gains are.

How Express Entry works

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC

Express Entry is IRCC’s online system for managing permanent residence applications from skilled workers under three programs: the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. You create a profile and enter a pool; IRCC scores profiles with the Comprehensive Ranking System, invites top-ranked candidates in rounds, and decides the applications of those who apply. Being in the pool doesn’t guarantee an invitation, and you can apply only if invited. A profile not invited within 12 months expires, and an invitation must be used within 60 days.

Skilled work experience abroad

Framing: you have skilled work experience outside Canada and want to know whether your profile is strong enough to be invited.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC · Federal Skilled Worker Program

The program looks for skilled, paid work experience in TEER 0 to 3 occupations within the last 10 years, a minimum first-language result, and a Canadian education credential or a foreign one with an Educational Credential Assessment. Applicants are also scored on separate selection factors with a pass mark, which differ from the ranking score, and must plan to live outside Quebec.

Canadian work experience

Framing: you are working, or have worked, in Canada and want to turn that into permanent residence before your permit ends.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC · Canadian Experience Class

You need at least a year of skilled, paid Canadian work experience in the three years before applying, gained while authorized under temporary resident status. Remote work counts only if you were physically in Canada working for a Canadian employer, and some work doesn’t count at all, such as work done while studying full time, self-employment and unpaid work. There’s no education requirement.

Skilled trades

Framing: you work in a trade and want to know whether a trades-specific route applies.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC · Federal Skilled Trades Program

The program covers specified trade occupations and asks for at least two years of full-time trade experience within the last five years, plus either a qualifying job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the trade. There’s no education requirement.

Provincial nomination

Framing: a province may want your skills even if your federal ranking is modest. A nomination can come through Express Entry or through a separate provincial process.

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC

Each province or territory sets how many people it can nominate each year, and tells each nominee which permanent residence route to use: Express Entry, or the separate process outside it. A nomination through an Express Entry-aligned provincial stream adds 600 points to your ranking score, and nominees continue to be invited through general and nominee-specific rounds. Since March 25, 2025, job offers no longer earn ranking points. In Express Entry, IRCC decides the permanent residence application.

Category-based selection

OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT OF CANADA, PROVINCIAL AND/OR TERRITORIAL REQUIREMENT · IRCC

To be invited in a category-based round, you must meet the Express Entry minimums and all of that round’s requirements. As of October 13, 2026, IRCC’s categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport, among others (IRCC – Category based selection: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/submit-profile/rounds-invitations/category-based-selection.html).

Questions people in your situation ask

  • Is my score competitive? It depends on recent invitation rounds, which change. As of October 13, 2026, IRCC holds rounds throughout the year and publishes them on its rounds-of-invitations page (IRCC – Rounds invitations: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/rounds-invitations.html). We’ll look at the current official data with you, not a figure from a forum.
  • Would a provincial nomination help? Often it’s the main lever for profiles that sit below recent cut-offs. See the practitioner note below.
  • Does my work permit status affect timing? Yes. If your permit expires while you’re in the pool, you must extend or restore it or leave Canada; working without status can make you ineligible. Having a profile in the pool isn’t the same as applying for permanent residence for bridging work permit purposes.
  • How long is a profile valid? Twelve months from submission if you aren’t invited; an expired profile is removed and its information isn’t kept.
  • What will I need to show? Language and credential results must stay valid while you’re in the pool. Proof of funds is required for the Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades programs, but not for the Canadian Experience Class or for people authorized to work in Canada with a valid job offer; the funds can’t be borrowed or come from home equity. Check the current required amounts on IRCC’s proof-of-funds page before you apply.
