French citizens have more Canadian work routes than most nationalities. Two stand out: International Experience Canada (IEC), for people aged 18 to 35, and Francophone Mobility, for French speakers with a job offer outside Quebec. Both are temporary work permits. Neither is a promise of permanent residence, and neither is a job placement.
Routes covered
- IEC Working Holiday: an open work permit of up to 24 months, no job offer needed first.
- IEC Young Professionals (including VIE): an employer-specific permit of up to 24 months with a qualifying offer.
- IEC International Co-op (Internship): up to 12 months for students, including those enrolled in a training centre in France.
- Francophone Mobility: an employer-specific permit, without an LMIA, for a job anywhere in Canada outside Quebec.
Where to start: check your age, your passport, whether you have used IEC before, and whether you already have a job offer. The 2026 IEC season is closed; profiles can be created again when the 2027 pools open. Check on the official IEC pages for dates.

How daily life compares
Exchange rate: Bank of Canada daily average, October 23, 2026: 1 EUR = 1.5667 CAD. Rates change every business day; this figure is for illustration only. [B1]
Rent per month (Numbeo, crowd-sourced, updated October 24 to 25, 2026, shown in EUR) [N1–N3]
| City | 1-bed, centre | 1-bed, outside centre | 3-bed, centre | 3-bed, outside centre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paris | €1,391 | €1,086 | €3,112 | €2,031 |
| Calgary | €1,107 | €916 | €1,727 | €1,491 |
| Montreal | €1,131 | €876 | €1,947 | €1,468 |
| Lyon | €785 | €601 | €1,610 | €1,148 |
| Edmonton | €981 | €819 | €1,556 | €1,287 |
What this shows: in Calgary, a 3-bedroom outside the centre (€1,491) costs about the same as a 1-bedroom in central Paris (€1,391). A 3-bedroom in central Calgary (€1,727) or Montreal (€1,947) costs well under a central Paris 3-bedroom (€3,112). Lyon is the exception: Numbeo shows Edmonton rents overall 12.1% higher than Lyon, although a central 3-bedroom is slightly cheaper in Edmonton (€1,556 vs €1,610). Compare city to city, not country to country.
Overall cost of living (Numbeo indices, October 25, 2026): compared with Paris, cost of living including rent is 20.5% lower in Calgary and about 24% lower in Montreal. Compared with Lyon, it is 4.5% lower in Edmonton. Numbeo also shows local purchasing power 11.8% higher in Calgary than in Paris. [N1–N3]
Official Canadian rent benchmark (different measure, not comparable to Numbeo): CMHC average rent, October 2025: Calgary CMA CAD 1,581 (1-bed) and CAD 1,908 (2-bed); Edmonton CMA CAD 1,301 and CAD 1,598. [C1]
Peace and stability: in the Global Peace Index 2026 (Institute for Economics & Peace), Canada ranks 14th of 163 (score 1.525) and France 99th (score 2.083). Lower scores are more peaceful. The index measures safety, ongoing conflict and militarisation, not only street safety. [G1]
