The short answer
British citizens aged 18–35 can apply to International Experience Canada (IEC) in three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/work-canada/iec/eligibility/eligibility-by-country.html). But an IEC permit is temporary. The better question is what you want to have built by the time it ends, and whether that includes permanent residence.
Start with your situation: no job offer yet, a job offer in hand, IEC already used, already in Canada, planning to stay, or moving with a partner.
We advise on immigration status and strategy, not job placement. We don’t sell jobs, job offers or LMIAs, and no outcome is guaranteed.

What this means for your strategy
Practitioner analysis, signed by both RCICs: Sean G. McKinsley and Kimberly J. White. Not an Official Government of Canada, Provincial and/or Territorial Requirement. We look at IEC as the first step in a plan, not a holiday. Our usual sequence: UK → Canadian work experience → Canadian career → PR strategy. The choices you make before you leave (category, timing, where you settle, what work you do) can widen or narrow your options later.
Start with Working Holiday
Read what the Working Holiday category covers, then think about what comes after.
Check whether your offer fits Young Professionals
Not every offer qualifies. We advise on the offer you already have; we don't find jobs.
Already used IEC?
What counts as a participation depends on your history. Never assume another one is available.
Already in Canada
Check your first weeks are covered, and plan before your permit's end date, not after it.

Thinking about permanent residence
IEC doesn't lead to PR automatically, but Canadian work experience can change your options.

Moving as a couple
IEC is individual. Each partner's options need checking separately.

A note from Sean
“As both a British and Canadian citizen, I understand why Canada appeals to people in the UK. The important question isn’t simply whether you can get an IEC work permit. It’s what you intend to build with the opportunity once you’re here.”
— Sean G. McKinsley, RCIC, CICC R529731 — Founder, Canada Immigration and Visa Services; Co-Counsel with Kimberly J. White
Work in Canada means immigration status, not job placement
We advise on your status and strategy. We don’t sell, find or arrange jobs, job offers or LMIAs. “I already have a job offer” means we’ll advise on an offer you already have.

What clients said
Reviews from the Canada Immigration and Visa Services Google listing (opens in a new tab).
As a British national, I worked with Sean, Kimberly, and their team on my permanent residence application. They were professional, responsive, and clear throughout the process, and their guidance helped make everything much easier. I would highly recommend them to others from the UK or anywhere looking to move to Canada.
