From IEC to permanent residence

The short answer

Not automatically. In our planning, we treat IEC as temporary status: permanent residence comes only through a separate program you qualify for. Canadian work experience gained on IEC may change your options, through Express Entry, the Canadian Experience Class, provincial programs and others (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/provincial-nominees/works.html). Each has its own requirements, though, and a year of work doesn’t produce PR on its own.

Don’t wait until your IEC permit is about to expire to think about permanent residence.

We advise on immigration status and strategy, not job placement. We don’t sell jobs, job offers or LMIAs, and no outcome is guaranteed.

Official requirements (Government of Canada)

Source: Government of Canada (IRCC). Official Government of Canada, Provincial and/or Territorial Requirements change; each item is dated and linked when verified.

  • Canadian Experience Class requirements, including skilled work experience
  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Express Entry profile and invitations, including category-based selection (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/submit-profile/rounds-invitations/category-based-selection.html)
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/provincial-nominees/works.html)
  • Provincial employer-supported streams in Alberta, Ontario and BC; Alberta lists IEC-based work permits as accepted for its Opportunity Stream (as of October 14, 2026, Government of Alberta: alberta.ca/aaip-alberta-opportunity-stream) (as of October 14, 2026, Government of Ontario: ontario.ca/page/ontario-workforce-priority-stream) (as of October 14, 2026, Government of British Columbia (WelcomeBC) (welcomebc.ca/immigrate-to-b-c/for-workers)) (as of October 14, 2026, Government of Alberta: alberta.ca/aaip-alberta-opportunity-stream-eligibility)
  • Employer-supported, regional and French-language routes: the Atlantic Immigration Program (job offer from a designated employer), the Rural and Francophone Community Immigration Pilots, and the Express Entry French-language category (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/atlantic-immigration.html) (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/rural-franco-pilots.html) (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/submit-profile/rounds-invitations/category-based-selection.html)
  • Your spouse or common-law partner’s factors count in Express Entry scoring, and spousal sponsorship is a separate route (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/check-score/crs-criteria.html) (as of October 14, 2026, IRCC: canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/spouse-partner-children.html)
  • An IEC permit can’t extend past the UK maximum; if you can’t extend or return home, you must apply to stay as a visitor before it expires

What this means for your strategy

Practitioner analysis, signed by both RCICs: Sean G. McKinsley and Kimberly J. White. Not an Official Government of Canada, Provincial and/or Territorial Requirement. In our practice, the people with the strongest options usually started planning in their first months, not their last. Which work you take, how long you stay in it, your language test results and your partner’s profile all shape a later application. We’d rather spend a consultation helping you plan the next 18 months than trying to fix the last three.

Composite example

A composite drawn from common situations, not a real client.

A professional, 6 months from IEC expiry, with skilled work in Canada. We’d check what experience counts, what a profile would look like now, and what status options exist when the permit ends.

What clients said

Reviews from the Canada Immigration and Visa Services Google listing (opens in a new tab).

As a British national, I worked with Sean, Kimberly, and their team on my permanent residence application. They were professional, responsive, and clear throughout the process, and their guidance helped make everything much easier. I would highly recommend them to others from the UK or anywhere looking to move to Canada.
