How we work

Here is what happens from the first booking to the decision on your application, and what we need from you at each stage.

1. You book a consultation

Pick a time on the booking page and accept our Initial Consultation Agreement. Booking is free. The booking tool asks only for your name, email, phone number and a short topic; we go through your situation, including any past applications or refusals, on the call.

Please don’t send passports, identity documents or other files at this stage. The booking form doesn’t accept them, and we don’t need them yet.

2. The assessment consultation

This is a 30-minute working session by video conference, for a flat fee of CAD $250 plus applicable GST (as of October 13, 2026). Sean G. McKinsley, RCIC, our senior practitioner, conducts your first video consultation. Booking is free, and the video call is included with no separate fee. The fee is earned only after substantive review of the information you provide when booking (and any documents we later request through our secure client process), issue identification, program analysis and preparation for your video call have been performed; opening a file alone doesn’t earn it. We invoice completed services, and payment must be made before your video call. We go through your facts and tell you:

  • which routes are realistic for you, and which aren’t;
  • what the weak points in your case are likely to be;
  • what you’d need to gather or change before applying;
  • roughly what it would cost, including government and third-party costs we can’t control.

Some people leave with a plan they carry out themselves. That’s a good result too.

3. A written strategy and engagement

If you want us to act for you, we send a written service agreement that sets out:

  • the route and the order of steps;
  • what we’ll do and what you’ll do;
  • our fee, and the government and third-party costs that are separate from it;
  • the risks we discussed.

Nothing starts until you’ve signed it.

4. Secure document exchange

After you accept the agreement, we open your file and request documents through our secure client process. We send a checklist built for your file, not a generic list, and review each document as it comes in.

5. Preparing and filing

We prepare the forms and submissions, and you review everything before it’s filed. If you appoint us as your representative, you complete IRCC’s Use of a Representative form, and IRCC then sends correspondence on your application to us rather than to you. Only one representative can act on an application at a time, and you can change or cancel the appointment whenever you like.

6. After filing

Applications can draw requests for more information, interviews or updated documents. We track deadlines, prepare responses with you and keep you told about where things stand.

The decision itself belongs to the officials responsible for the program. We don’t promise or predict outcomes; we tell you honestly where your file is strong and where it isn’t.

What we won’t do

  • Guarantee or imply an approval.
  • Take documents through an open web form or email attachment.
  • Hand your file to someone you haven’t met.
  • Quote a processing time as if it were fixed. Official times change; we point you to the current official figure.

Questions people ask

Do I have to hire you after the consultation?

No. The consultation stands on its own. Many people use it to check a plan they intend to carry out themselves.

Can you tell me my chances?

We’ll tell you where your case is strong and where it is exposed, and what would improve it. We won’t give you a percentage, because no one outside the deciding office can.

Do you only handle Alberta programs?

No. We advise on federal programs and on many provincial programs across Canada. We do not practise in Quebec.

How do I send you my documents?

After you accept the agreement, we request your documents and questionnaire through our secure client process. Never through the website forms.

Common questions

Answers from the Team of Sean G. McKinsley and Kimberly J. White, two Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants working together as co-counsel. Every case is different; for advice on yours, book a consultation.

Does a consultation make you my representative?

No. A consultation is professional advice on your situation. It is not an application, and it does not make us your representative. If you want us to prepare or submit an application or represent you, that needs a separate signed Retainer/Service Agreement, which sets out the scope of work, fees and who is your representative of record. Until then, you are free to use the advice yourself or to go elsewhere.

Can you guarantee my application will be approved?

No. Nobody can honestly guarantee an immigration outcome. Decisions are made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and by provincial and territorial governments, not by consultants. Using a representative does not mean an application will be approved. What we can do is give you a straight answer about your options, tell you the risks and costs before you go too far down a pathway, and prepare your matter carefully. Be wary of anyone who promises approval.

Is my information kept confidential?

Yes. Sean G. McKinsley and Kimberly J. White are bound by the confidentiality obligations of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants Code of Professional Conduct. Information obtained through the professional relationship is kept confidential indefinitely. It is disclosed only where you authorize it, where the law, a court, a tribunal or the College requires or authorizes it, or where professional rules otherwise permit it, and then only as far as reasonably necessary. How we handle personal information on this website is set out in our Privacy Policy.

Should I upload passports or other sensitive documents through the website?

No. Please do not send passports, identity documents, medical, police or financial records, or other files through this website. Our booking form asks only for your name, email, phone number and mailing address, which the consultation agreement needs, and it does not accept uploads. After you accept the agreement, we request the documents and questionnaire we need through our secure client process, never through the website.
